1/3 Life Crisis

I've been skeptical in the past about whether or not existential crises exist. Not because I doubt the reality of the experience which the term describes, but because I think the term 'existential' is so broad as to be meaningless.

No matter whether existentialism exists though, I think Mathises are destined to travel through its web of crises on a pretty much continual basis. Now that my 1/4 life crises relating to where I want to live and what I want to do with my life have been mostly sorted, my 1/3 life crisis has to do with who I want to be. I think the reason I've never been able to decide what haircut to get or which clothes to buy is that I've never really decided that. Or maybe I've just been spending too much time with eternally conflicted teenagers lately.

Who's to say what fun is next?

I figured out who I was while I was unemployed for 9 months. I highly recommend unemployment. I mean, its stressful, but you have plenty of time to read and think about those really really unimportant aspects of living...like, am i going to eat tomorrow or today? and one meal (beans) or two (cereal and beans)? yeah, its pretty awesome. you wont have any crisis after being unemployed for near a year.

Are you insinuating that I should think more about the little people before I go posting blogs complaining about my problems?

Why would I want you to think about little people? They just have a bigger world to roam than we do. So, yeah, I guess they have a difficult time, too.

No, I suggest you quit your job and take some time to figure out who you are. Now, before you protest, I realize that not everyone has the good fortune to be laid off, so this will require some initiative on your part.

Maybe I can just have an unemployment immersion experience--like three weeks off with pay or something.

I've never been jobless but I have been fortunate enough to experience a soul crushing level of poverty. The only thing I learned about myself from the experience is that I hate being poor and that Dayton Power and Light would rather cut off your electricity than work out a reasonable repayment plan for people in hard times.
